(May 29, 2009) Winnipeg – Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia Member of Parliament,  Steven Fletcher, says the seven projects announced today show the federal government’s commitment to its Economic Action Plan and infrastructure in Manitoba.

“These projects will put Manitobans to work, boost the economy and improve our communities,” said Fletcher. “This is another example of the real action our government is taking to support Manitobans during this economic downturn.”

“Investing in infrastructure is a triple win for Manitoba,” said Premier Doer.  “We’re stimulating the economy, creating jobs and building a better tomorrow for all Manitobans, and today’s announcement reaffirms the provinces commitment to building and renewing infrastructure in Manitoba."

The Governments of Canada and Manitoba will provide funding for the construction of four NHL-size ice pads at the new True North MoosePlex Hockey Canada Centre in Winnipeg. This facility, to be built in St. James, will support the development of amateur athletes and will also be available for public use.

Other Projects that will benefit from today’s announcement include the Manitoba Centennial Centre Refurbishment, improvements to the United Way Headquarters, Winnipeg Harvest Community Food Distribution and Training Centre, the Manitoba Sikh Cultural and Seniors Centre, Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium and Salvation Army Multicultural Family Centre.

“Today’s announcement is another example of how our government is stimulating the economy, creating jobs and improving Manitoba’s roads, buildings and facilities,” said Fletcher.

The Government of Canada’s Economic Action Plan is accelerating and expanding the existing federal investment of $33 billion in infrastructure with almost $12 billion in new infrastructure stimulus funding over two years.
