Fletcher Attends Launch Of Operation Nanook 2008
August 19, 2008
OTTAWA — Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia and Parliamentary Secretary for Health, today will join the Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and General Walter Natynczyk, the Chief of the Defence Staff, in downtown Iqaluit, Nunavut, to launch Operation NANOOK 2008. The intent of Operation NANOOK 2008 is to project sovereignty in the eastern Arctic, and to also provide a means to exercise the Canadian Force's ability to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in the North. Operation Nanook will include exercise scenarios that simulate maritime emergencies, such as an evacuation of a ship in distress and an oil spill. The Canadian Forces will support the other government departments participating in the exercise with their response to these scenarios. The launch ceremony will be held in conjunction with Community Day activities in the downtown Iqaluit. These activities, including a day-sail aboard the frigate HMCS Toronto, a BBQ, a ball-hockey game, and an obstacle course for children, are put on by Operation NANOOK participants to thank the Iqaluit community for their support, and to enable the community to get to know some of the over 600 personnel who will be participating in the operation. |
