Fletcher Speaks to more than 200 at Red Shirt Rally
August 15, 2008

OTTAWA — Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood–St. James–Assiniboia and Parliamentary Secretary for Health, today spoke to the more than 200 Manitobans who wore red to show support for our troops stationed in Afghanistan and around the world.

“I was privileged to address today’s rally to speak to my strong personal support, as well as our government’s support for our troops” said Fletcher. “We must also remember the families that sacrifice so much so our soldiers can provide security and freedom for the people of Afghanistan.”

The Red Shirt Rally was held on the front steps of the Manitoba Legislature just behind the “Yellow Ribbon” garden. The volunteer committee organizing the event video recorded the rally all will be sharing the footage with the troops currently serving in Afghanistan to show Manitoba is behind them.

Steven was joined by other special guests including Bonnie Korzeniowski, MLA for St. James and Special Envoy for Military Affairs and Colonel Robert Poirier, Commander of 38 Canadian Brigade Group. Additional speakers included family members of those currently stationed in Afghanistan and area veterans.

“I was deeply moved by what was said by the families in attendance at today’s rally” said Fletcher. “The pride expressed by Doug May, who has a son currently serving in Afghanistan, was inspirational.”

Red Shirt Rallies have been held across Canada in various towns and cities over the past several years. The public rallies are non-partisan, non-political events in support of Canadian troops and their families.
