The government of Canada provides tax relief for Canadian businesses
January 19, 2010
(Winnipeg) – Manitoba businesses are benefiting from a better business environment thanks to the Government of Canada’s significant tax reductions says The Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia.

“Our government has cut taxes for Canadian businesses to help them generate employment and stimulate economic growth,” said Fletcher. “This means new investment and job opportunities for Manitoba.”

Since 2006, the Government of Canada has provided much relief for Canadian businesses including:
  • The elimination of the corporate surtax in 2008 for all corporations.
  • A reduction in the federal general corporate income tax rate to 19 per cent as of January 1, 2009, and to 18 per cent as of January 1, 2010.
  • The reduction of the federal income tax rate for small businesses to 11 percent and increased the small business income eligibility for that tax from $400,000 to $500,000.
  • The permanent elimination of tariffs on a wide range of machinery and equipment for the manufacturing industry.
  • The elimination of the federal capital tax in 2006 and by 2012 all provincial general capital taxes.
  • The temporary Accelerated Capital Cost Allowance allowing manufacturing companies to write-off purchases of new equipment.

“These tax reductions have helped insulate Canada from the worst of the global recession,” said Fletcher. “Thanks to measures taken by our Conservative government, Canada is now positioned to be one of the countries to lead the world into recovery.”
