The government of Canada supports Manitoba seniors and their communities
January 08, 2010
(Winnipeg) -  The quality of life for Manitoba seniors is improving through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program says the Honourable Steven Fletcher, Member of Parliament for Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia.

“Seniors in Manitoba require resources so they can be active and social in their community,” said Fletcher. “The New Horizons for Seniors program is helping seniors share their experience and knowledge with their community and improves activity facilities for them.”

The New Horizons for Seniors program provides funding to those community-based projects and non-profit organizations that qualify. There are three types of funding that the projects and organizations can apply under: community participation and leadership, capital assistance and elder abuse awareness.

Community-based projects that qualify under community participation and leadership funding and non-profit organizations that qualify under capital assistance can receive a grant of up to $25,000. Elder abuse awareness funding provides up to $250,000 of contribution funding to non-profit organizations that qualify.

“Our government is working to ensure seniors have all the necessary means to participate in their communities,” said Fletcher. “We will continue to support our seniors as they are an important part of our communities.”
